It's no secret that I love my Happy Planner. Actually I should say my Happy Planners, because I have more than one of every size for different things: a Classic size for my everyday planning, a Mini for my purse, and now a Big planner for holidays and special projects. Not to mention a DIY coupon organizer!

One of the main reasons I love the Happy Planner system so much is that I can easily customize my planner any way that I want, and that includes creating my own sections with printable planner pages. I have printable planners for everything from the books I'm reading to projects I'm working on and even a section for my pets' important information.

Read more about why I switched to the Happy Planner here.

So how do I get these printable planner pages to fit in any size Happy Planner? It is super easy to do and works with any size planner, not just Happy Planner. Ready to learn how to resize printables to fit any Happy Planner size? Here are the step by step instructions you need to know.

How to Resize Printables to Fit Any Happy Planner Size

This tutorial will work for any size planner or notebook but I'm focusing on the three Happy Planner sizes since that is what I use and recommend. First you need to know what size Happy Planner page you need. There are three Happy Planner page sizes to choose from:
  • Mini Happy Planner: 4.5 inches wide by 7 inches tall
  • Classic Happy Planner: 7 inches wide by 9.25 inches tall
  • Big Happy Planner: 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall (standard US letter size)

You can see the comparison here:

If you have a Big Happy Planner, you will want to print using 8.5 x 11 inch letter size paper, which is what most printables are designed to and what your printer will use as a default. But what if you have one of the two smaller size planners (or both like me)? There is a super easy way to print to any size Happy Planner without having to resize your printable file. Here's what you do.

The photos below show my HP Officejet Pro on a Mac computer, so your screens may look slightly different, but this should still work with almost all desktop printers.

The secret to making printables that will fit any size Happy Planner is to change your paper size to the size of your planner, no matter what actual paper size you are using.

And, you can do this just once then use it as many times as you'd like by creating a Custom Paper Size for your printer.

Watch the video below to see how it's done, or keep reading for directions!

Directions:

Start by opening your printable and selecting Print. When your printer dialog box opens, go to paper size and open the drop down menu. Scroll down to the bottom where you will see Custom Sizes. Choose Add Custom Size if you have never made one before or Manage Custom Sizes if you have.

Give your custom size a name and enter the width and height that will fit your planner.

For the Mini Happy Planner, enter 4.5 for width and 7 for height.

For the Classic Happy Planner, enter 7 for width and 9.25 for height.

Under this, you will see choices for "Non-Printable Area". This is the margins, and I leave them as is. I'd recommend leaving at least .25" all the way around, but you can adjust them if you'd like.

Hit OK to save your new custom size.

Now you want to make sure that your printable fits properly onto your new page size. Here you'll use the Scale feature and select "Scale to Fit" and "Print Entire Image." This will ensure that you get the entire printable on your page, no matter what size the original.

Hit print, grab your new pages, and trim to size as needed. I use a guillotine paper cutter for fast and easy straight cuts.

You can see that this printable from my 2019 Mom Life Organized Planner easily works for any size Happy Planner. And once you create your custom page size, all you need to do is select that page size any time you want to print a page for your planner.

You'll also want to grab a Happy Planner punch to easily fit your new printable page onto your planner rings. Now you can create your own customized planners for every occasion!
