This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Nauzene Kids. All opinions are 100% mine.

We were enjoying a beautiful day at the playground when one of my twins called from the swings.

"Mommy! My tummy hurts!"

I helped him slow down and when he stepped off the swing he promptly threw up. Mom life at its most real, right?

Moms know that kids and tummy aches are a common occurrence. But there may be some things you don't know about your child's upset stomach. I'm here to help you learn common reasons why kids get tummy aches and how to help them feel better fast.

What moms need to know about kids and tummy aches: what causes them, how to take care of them, and when to see the doctor.

What Moms Need to Know About Kids & Tummy Aches

Kids get tummy aches. Knowing the reasons why, how to make them feel better, and when to call the doctor is the key to dealing with this unfortunate fact of mom life.

Why Kids Get Upset Stomachs

When you hear, "mommy, my tummy hurts," your first thought may be wondering what is causing it. While there are a million different reasons for kids to get a tummy ache, these are some of the most common reasons for children nausea:
  • Viral infections (also called the "stomach flu")
  • Food poisoning
  • Constipation
  • Over indulging in food or drinks
  • Car sickness
  • Anxiety

One of the worst things about being a mom is not knowing why your kids are feeling bad.

When you have little kids, they can't often tell you exactly what is wrong. So when they say "my tummy hurts" or they throw up, it's hard to figure out what is causing the problem.

So when my son threw up on the playground, I immediately thought, oh no. Here comes the stomach bug.

I was envisioning a few days of misery because once one kid gets it, both kids get it. And that makes my tummy start to hurt a little bit too.

Fortunately, there is something you can do to help, no matter what is causing your kids' tummy ache. And making our kids feel better helps our mama stress too.

How to Help Kids with Upset Stomachs

The good news is that tummy aches are often short lived, minor discomforts. I've found an awesome way to help my kids feel better fast when they are dealing with nausea and tummy aches from motion sickness, stomach bugs, and more.

Nauzene Kids is the pediatrician recommended remedy for nausea and Kids upset stomach (it works for grown ups too!). It provides fast, effective relief for nausea caused by overindulging, car sickness, or even the stomach flu. With no artificial colors, dyes, or parabens, I can feel good giving it to my kids. And with a yummy grape flavor, they are happy to take it to help relieve their tummy troubles.

After my son threw up on the playground, we hurried home and I gave him a dose of Nauzene Kids. After a little rest he was feeling much better and ready to play again. It was pretty clear that his tummy ache was a combination of too much swinging right after a big lunch and that, much to his dismay, he wouldn't be missing school the next day. Stomach bug averted this time!

Nauzene Kids is now a staple in my medicine cabinet for quick relief of minor tummy aches. I'm also sure to toss it into my bag when we head out on weekend adventures, to make sure that upset stomachs don't ruin our fun!

So how do you know what is causing your childs' tummy ache? It can be hard to tell. Viral infections and food poisoning have similar symptoms beyond tummy aches, including vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.

If your child is not exhibiting these symptoms, look at their recent behavior. Have they just eaten a large meal or drank a large amount of liquid (especially carbonated beverages)? Kids have little tummies, so it doesn't take a lot to make them feel overstuffed and uncomfortable.

Also look at their activity. Were they swinging or spinning at the playground (like my son) right before complaining of nausea? Then it might be motion sickness.

If neither of these things seems like the trigger for a tummy ache, it may be a sign of anxiety. I have had a "nervous tummy" since childhood, and it was only when I was a teenager that I was able to articulate that my upset stomach was actually caused by worries. Kids who complain of stomach pain before school for example may be dealing with stress or anxiety.

When to Call the Doctor

While it's true that most tummy aches are easy to treat, there are times when you should call your doctor to help treat your child's symptoms.

Some of the signs that your child may need to see the doctor include:
  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Dehydration & inability to keep down fluids
  • Severe, sudden pain
  • When the abdomen is tender to the touch
  • Stomach pain accompanied by a high fever
  • Pain that is incapacitating

Please remember I'm not a doctor and this is not medical advice, so if you have concerns it is always better to err on the safe side and call the doctor.

Tummy aches are a fact of life when you have kids. But when you know why they are happening and how to help your kids feel better fast it is a lot easier to manage. Even when they throw up at the playground.
