Gather Your Supplies

The first section of your checklist gives you a list of all the supplies you will need for your end of summer cleaning. Gather everything together in one spot before you start to make things easier.

You'll need:

One of the biggest things I have to deal with when it comes to cleaning is fighting stains. That's why Spot Shot Instant Carpet Stain Remover® is a must-have in my arsenal.

With two active boys, two dogs, and a cat, I know a lot about stains. Spot Shot is what my mom always used and it has been my go-to stain remover for as long as I can remember. Spot Shot works on all sorts of stains, even old ones. Everything from mud to pet messes, to red wine and coffee (aka mom messes). Spot Shot gets it all clean, and helps protect your carpet from new stains too!

Spot Shot Instant Carpet Stain Remover is easy to use: just spray on the stain and blot with a clean cloth. That's it! No scrubbing required.

All carpets must be pre-tested for color-fastness.

I like to pick up Spot Shot on my regular Target run. See where to find it near you here, and be sure to click here for a money saving coupon.

Where to Clean

Once you have your Spot Shot and other supplies ready, it's time to get cleaning. Here's where you want to focus for your end of summer cleaning.
  • Clean countertops and surfaces with multi-purpose cleaner
  • Disinfect bathroom surfaces
  • Wash windows
  • Wipe down door handles and light switches
  • Dust surfaces
  • Vacuum/mop floors
  • Spot treat carpet stains and high traffic areas
  • Wipe down outdoor furniture

Get Organized for the School Year

The last step to getting ready for the school year is to get organized. You'll want to clean and store your summer gear, and make sure everything is dry before packing it away.

You'll also want to clean out and organize your refrigerator/freezer and pantry to get ready for school lunches, after school snacks, and easy family dinners.

Be sure to get your mud room or foyer ready for back to school too by setting up an area for backpacks, shoes, jackets, and other "out the door" essentials.

And finally, don't forget to clean out the car. If it's anything like mine, it's filled with sand after a summer of fun (and more than one ice cream stain). Once you give it a good vacuuming you can use Spot Shot to take care of upholstery and carpet stains in the car too!
