"Mom, can we get a pet mouse?"

When my 5 year old asked me this the other day, my answer was a firm no. Don't get me wrong, I actually love small animals and have had some really sweet gerbils and hamsters (RIP Pop-Tart), but we already have two dogs and a cat so our house is full.

Our pets have been a part of our family since before my twins were born, so it's no surprise that my boys love animals. And since they would love to have a total menagerie, I decided the the next best thing would be some fun pet art activities. Now they can create as many animals as they could imagine without adding to our real life furry family.

Make a Pet Art Activity for Kids

My boys love pet art activities, and this one was a big hit in our house. And I've made it super easy for you to share this project with your kids with 6 free printable pet animal templates to get you started.

All you need to let your kids get creative is the free printable pet templates and craft supplies that you already have. Add in your child's imagination and you have a craft project they will love!

Start with the free printable pet animal template pages. You can download the set by clicking on the button below. You'll get 1 PDF file with 6 unique animals: a dog, cat, mouse, rabbit, bird, and lizard. There's something for all the little animal lovers in your family!

I recommend printing these pages on card stock for best results.

Then, set out your pages with an assortment of craft supplies. You can use just about anything from glitter to crayons. Here's what I included in our setup:

You can add in any other supplies you like. Then let your kids loose to create their own unique pet art!

My boys loved this art activity. Not only did they draw faces on each animal but they were sure to add in the things that pets need, like a collar, food and water bowls, and even a bone for the dog. This is a great activity to help start the conversation about caring for pets, especially if you are considering bringing a real pet into your family soon.
