Make Your Own Book for Kids | Free Printable

Make your own book for kids with this free printable template!

My mom recently uncovered a treasure from my childhood - a book I had written at age 6 about my Grandpa and his horse. Technically I had illustrated it and dictated the words to her to write down, which made it even more special because we did it together. It brought back so many memories and I knew it was a project I wanted to try with my kids. Then when we discovered this month's Family Dinner Book Club selection, we had the perfect inspiration for our make your own books for kids.

Make your own book for kids! A fun activity for book loving kids to write and illustrate their own story book. Inspired by this month's Family Dinner Book Club book - this free printable is perfect for sharing stories around the dinner table!

Family Dinner Book Club

Family Dinner Book Club is a wonderful way for families to connect over good books, easy crafts, and delicious food. It's simple - every month, we share a book with activities & conversation starters from Growing Book by Book, a themed menu from Chef Sarah Elizabeth, and an easy craft from me. This year, I'm super excited that we're going "around the world" and each month's book will showcase a different country.

This month, we are visiting Colombia for a really sweet story that celebrates a young girl's love of books, Waiting for the Biblioburro.

Ana loves books, but since her teacher moved away from her rural village, she only has one. Then one day, a traveling librarian arrives bearing books carried by donkeys - the biblioburro. Ana's love of books is fueled and while waiting for the biblioburro's return, she decides to make her own book. This was my favorite part of the story and inspired our make your own book for kids.

Make Your Own Book for Kids

Inspired by Ana's creation in Waiting for the Biblioburro, as well as my own first grade masterpiece, I designed these simple make your own book templates for this month's Family Dinner Book Club craft. You can let your children's imaginations go wild and turn their favorite stories into their own special books, just like Ana.

The printable is easy to use - it includes a cover and author page as well as interior pages. There is a space for drawing as well as writing your story, and you can use as many or as few pages as you need. And if your child is not yet writing, you can have him or her draw pictures and dictate the words to you. Get the make your own book printable delivered right to your email below.

To assemble the book, first print one copy of page 1 - the cover and author page. Next, print as many copies of the interior pages as you'd like. Do this by printing pages 2-3 of the printable double sided. Then place the cover on the outside, fold, and secure with staples. Now you have your own book!

Use crayons, markers, stickers, paint - anything you'd like to tell your story. You can create your books as part of your Family Book Club dinner or make them in advance and share your stories over the meal!
