Firefly Tealights: Family Dinner Book Club Craft for Firefly Hollow

Make adorable firefly tealights inspired by the children's book Firefly Hollow by Alison McGhee! This month's Family Dinner Book Club table craft is easy and fun for kids to create and is perfect for summer decorating. So cute!

It's the first day of the month and time for Family Dinner Book Club! This is one of my absolute favorite projects - not only because we get to read a wonderful book and come up with a fun craft to go with it, but because I get the opportunity to see so many people sharing their experiences with Family Dinner Book Club on our Facebook page! Sharing a meal, a book, and a project is an amazing way to bond with your family and this month we have another fun pick for you.

If you're new to Family Dinner Book Club, the idea is simple. Every month, we give you everything you need to enjoy a book club night with your entire family. Jodie from Growing Book by Book shares our book of the month along with discussion topics and service projects. Sarah from Chef Sarah Elizabeth gives you a mouth watering themed menu, and I share an easy table craft that your whole family can enjoy.

Firefly Hollow: Family Dinner Book Club Pick for July

This month's pick is Firefly Hollow, written by Alison McGhee and illustrated by Christopher Denise. Firefly Hollow is a charming chapter book that has been compared to Charlotte's Web and Mrs. Frisby & the Rats of NIMH (which is one of my all time favorites). Firefly Hollow follows the adventures of Firefly, Cricket, Vole, and Peter, who are each trying to chase their dreams and find their way through this big big world. It's a wonderful story and is destined to be a family favorite.

Watching fireflies is one of my favorite things to do on a summer night, so for our Firefly Hollow inspired craft, we decided to make some little firefly lights to decorate your dinner table. These are really simple and something the whole family can create and personalize! Here's the how to.

Firefly Tealights

To make your firefly tealights, you'll need:

Start by twisting two silver twist ties into your wing shape. Attach the ends of the wings to each tealight with your clear tape.

Then wrap the base of the tealight with the washi tape.

Finally, draw the eyes onto the tape at the front of the light. That's it! You can personalize these little guys by mixing up the tape that you use, or by drawing on different types of eyes. Be creative and have fun!

Turn on your fireflies and add them to your Family Dinner Book Club table setting. So simple and so fun!

And be sure to complete your Firefly Hollow book club experience by visiting Growing Book by Book for table topics & service projects, and Chef Sarah Elizabeth for a full themed dinner menu.

And be sure to share photos of your Family Dinner Book Club on our Facebook page - we LOVE to see them!
