There's nothing better than seeing your kids fall in love with one of your childhood favorites, whether it's a book, movie or, in the case of The Wizard of Oz, both!

Many of our family's favorite books have become movies, and that's why I am super excited that our Family Dinner Book Club will be exploring children's books and movies through the decades this year. And that we are starting with a magical classic that kids and grown-ups have loved for generations.

Family Dinner Book Club: Books and Movies Through the Years

Our Family Dinner Book Club is one of my favorite projects. If you're joining us for the first time, the concept is simple. Every month, my co-hosts and I give you conversation starters, a full dinner menu, and activity all centered around that month's book. It's a fantastic way to connect over great books, food, and conversation... and this year we are adding movies to the mix as all our books will have been made into films!

The Wizard of Oz Inspired Board Game

We're kicking off this year's Family Dinner Book Club with L. Frank Baum's classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I'm sure you've seen the movie (who hasn't??), but have you also read the book? We listened to it on audio last year and my seven year old twins were enthralled (Anne Hathaway does an amazing job and you can get it FREE with an Audible trial).

We often have Wizard of Oz movie nights, so to make our Wizard of Oz family dinner book club night extra special, I created a fun board game inspired by the story. And I have it here as a free printable for your family too!

This game is simple enough for all ages to play. All you need is your printable game board, along with playing pieces and a single die.  You can use anything for playing pieces: grab some from your favorite game or use M&M candies for an extra treat.

The object of the game is easy - follow the yellow brick road and try to be the first player to reach the Emerald City.

To play, place your playing pieces on the START square. Then each player takes a turn rolling the die and moving the number of spaces shown. The winner is the first one to reach the last square at the Emerald City.
