Soothing DIY Paw Balm for Dogs with Free Printable Labels

Make a soothing DIY paw balm for dogs to keep your pup's feet feeling good.

When you think about it, a dog's paws go through a lot. They have to deal with hot surfaces in the summer and ice and snow in the winter. All without shoes! I know that right now our deck is so hot in the afternoon that I can't even let my dogs walk on it without fear of their paws being burned.

Considering all that our dogs' paws touch on a daily basis, it's no surprise that sometimes they become dry and irritated. That's why I love to keep a supply of paw balm on hand to keep their feet feeling good. This DIY paw balm for dogs is easy to make, has soothing essential oils, and I've included free printable labels to make this a great gift for your dog loving friends too.

Soothing DIY Paw Balm for Dogs

A few things to note about this recipe: I'm not a vet or a certified aromatherapist, so if you have any questions about using these ingredients on your pet be sure to talk to your veterinarian first. Some pets may have sensitivities or allergies to essential oils so it's always a good idea to start slowly (you can also omit the essential oils if you prefer).

Also, this recipe is for a balm for you to use to help protect and soothe your dog's paws from everyday irritation. It is not intended to be used on wounds or injuries, and if your dog's paws have open sores I would recommend seeing your veterinarian first.

But if you want to pamper your pup and keep him feeling great, this paw balm is exactly what you need!

DIY PAW BALM INGREDIENTS

This paw balm is super easy to make, with ingredients that can be used to make so many awesome natural products for your pets and your family.

You will need:

1/2 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup grated beeswax or soy wax
1/4 cup shea butter
2 tablespoons jojoba oil
1/4 cup sunflower or olive oil
2 teaspoons ginger
10-20 drops lemon essential oil
10-20 drops helichrysum essential oil
10-20 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops cedarwood oil

If you don't have these oils on hand, or just want to save a little money, you can substitute 40-60 drops of this Skin Soother blend. This is one of my favorite blends and all the oils in it are dog safe (and kid safe too).

You'll also need small airtight containers (4 oz. Mason jars work great, and is what the printable labels will fit.) Or you can use lip balm tubes like these which are great for keeping in your bag to use on the go. I like to make a mix of both!

INSTRUCTIONS

Add the coconut oil, shea butter, sunflower oil and jojoba oil to a medium size microwave safe bowl. Melt in 30 second intervals, stirring after each until all ingredients are melted.

Add your sunflower oil. You can also use grapeseed, safflower or any other nut or plant-based oil.

Add the ginger to the bowl.

Add your essential oils, if desired.

Whisk everything together.

Gently pour the mixture into your air tight container or lip balm tube. This recipe will make plenty so that you can even use them as gifts!

If you're using the jars, be sure to grab my free printable labels. You can download them by clicking the button below. Simply print on label paper, cut out, and adhere to the top of your jar.
