Make an easy homemade deodorizer to freshen your whole house. Safe to use around kids and dogs!

With kids and pets in my house, sometimes we need to freshen things up a bit. I want our house to be fresh and clean but I'm not a fan of perfuming the air with heavy scents or chemicals I can't pronounce. That's why I'm in love with this homemade deodorizer powder.

With only 2 ingredients, it's all natural, safe to use around my kids and my dogs, and it works in lots of places where odors like to hide. It only take 5 minutes to make and a little goes a long way. Want the secret? Keep reading to learn how to make your own homemade deodorizer and keep your house fresh and clean all year round!

2 Ingredient Homemade Deodorizer

This homemade deodorizer is so simple to make, and you can customize it to your scent preferences (and to make sure it is safe around your kids and dogs). Here's what you need to make your own.

  • 4 Cups Baking Soda
  • 20 Drops Essential Oil

Choosing the Right Essential Oil for Your Family

I'll admit that it took me some convincing to start using essential oils in our home. I was never comfortable with the sales tactics of many oil companies, and I wasn't sure if I was getting correct information or just a hard sell. I also never understood why I needed to pay to "join" just to get a competitive price. But I wanted to make sure that I was getting pure, quality products before using them around my family.

I did a lot of research and discovered Plant Therapy oils and am now a big fan. You can buy Plant Therapy oils directly from their website or on Amazon. Shipping is fast and free, and there's no requirements to sign up.

What I love most about Plant Therapy is their KidSafe line of single oils and synergies. It takes the guesswork out of knowing which oils are safe to use around my children, and if I ever have questions, they have certified aromatherapists ready to answer via email (and they are super fast and helpful!).

Since we also have dogs, I like to doublecheck that the oils we are using are safe for them too. Here's a great list of safe essential oils to use around your dogs.

(One note: we also have a cat, and cats do not process oils well. We are very cautious about how and where we use oils in our home for this reason, and keep them out of rooms that our cat frequents. Please read this before using oils if you have cats, or check with your veterinarian).

My favorite essential oils to use in our homemade deodorizer (kid and dog safe!)
See all the KidSafe oils here and be sure to double check that they are also dog safe if you have pups at home.

Making Your Homemade Deodorizer

Directions:
  • Place one cup of baking soda inside a shaker bottle. You can reuse a parmesan cheese container, a carpet fresh container, or pick up a stainless steel shaker like this one. You can also use a mason jar with a shaker top like this.
  • Add 5 drops essential oil on top of the baking soda inside the bottle.
  • Close the bottle and shake well.
  • Repeat steps 1-3 until all ingredients have been used up or your bottle is full.
  • Close the lid and your deodorizer is ready to go! Keep reading for all the places you can use it to keep your home fresh.

How to Use Your Homemade Deodorizer

Your new deodorizing powder can be used in lots of places to make your whole house smell and feel fresh.

Carpets and Rugs: Sprinkle on carpets and rugs and let sit for 30 minutes (keep kids and pets out of the room while it is out). Vacuum it up to remove odors easily.

In the Trash Can: Sprinkle a bit in the bottom of your trash can or diaper pail to prevent stinky smells.

In the Sink: Sprinkle in your kitchen or bathroom sinks, scrub gently, and rinse for a clean fresh smell.

Toilet Bowls: Sprinkle in the toilet bowl, swish with a brush, and let sit for 30 minutes. Flush it away for a fresh clean.

Mattresses: Sprinkle on your mattress, let sit, and vacuum with your accessory wand for fresher beds.

In the Car: Sprinkle on upholstery and mats then vacuum.

All Over Fresh: Place in an open mason jar and allow it to absorb odors (just keep it out of reach of kids and pets). Replace once a week.
