Encourage kids to read with a free printable book bingo game for Fall & Halloween!

Along with pumpkin spice and everything nice, one of the things that I love most about fall is all the wonderful books that I can read with my kids. I'm not going to lie - our Halloween books usually go into heavy rotation by mid-August. This year, I'm making our fall reading even more fun with a super easy book bingo game and I have it here as a free printable for your family too!

Let me say one thing first: I am not a fan of traditional reading logs, where kids are expected to read for a certain amount of time every day and record their progress. There is ample evidence that these don't work (see more here) and can actually decrease a child's desire to read for pleasure. Reading is not a timed activity in our house, rather something that my kids and I enjoy and a special way for us to spend time together.

That said, my boys participated in our library's summer reading challenge and they loved keeping track of all the books they had read. So as Fall rolls around I thought we would continue the idea of keeping record of what we read and turn it into a little game too.

Fall Book Bingo Game

This game is a super fun way to discover new books and keep track of what you've already read. It's simple - each square has a fall theme on it. All you have to do is find and read a book featuring each theme and then mark the square when you are done.

It's easy to find great kids books without breaking the bank, and you don't even have to leave home to do it. Once you've picked out your books, you can make this into a reading challenge for your kids - give them a fun surprise when they've made 5 in a row or when they've filled the entire card.
