Glitter Popcorn Ornament Inspired by If You Take a Mouse to the Movies

A fun and easy Christmas Ornament for kids to make inspired by If You Take a Mouse to the Movies! Preschoolers will love making these homemade Christmas ornaments and you'll love how sparkly they are on the tree!

I love having ornaments on our Christmas tree that are made by my kids - and when we can make homemade ornaments based on our favorite books it's even better! My preschoolers have fallen in love with If You Take a Mouse to the Movies this year, so we made a really fun (and easy) Christmas ornament craft to go with the book!

If You Take a Mouse to the Movies is a really fun Christmas book by Laura Numeroff, author of the classic If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. It's one of our favorites this season (and was one of our 10 Christmas Mouse Books for Kids). In it, Mouse goes to the movies, and while eating popcorn, realizes he needs to decorate for Christmas. Silliness ensues (as you'd expect from Mouse), there's glitter, and he ends up with a lovely tree and another trip to the movies. We used two of Mouse's favorite things from the book - popcorn and glitter - to put together a really cute ornament that kids will love to make.

Glitter Popcorn Ornaments

To make your own Mouse inspired ornaments, you'll need:

Set out your popcorn and glitter in small bowls or cups. You may want to line your table with paper for easier clean up. Open the ornaments and set out the two halves as well. Invite your children to dip the popcorn in the glitter.

We actually tried this with glue first, but it made a terrible mess! One of my twins dipped the plain popcorn directly in the glitter, and we found that it stuck really well, so we tossed the glue and just dipped straight into the glitter.

After they dip, have them put the sparkly popcorn into the halves of their ornament. Be sure to supervise this activity to make sure there's no snacking after the popcorn has been dipped!

Once the two halves are nearly full, snap them closed. Make sure the holes for the ribbon line up. Run a piece of washi tape along the seam to seal the ornament shut.

Then thread your ribbon through the holes and you're done! Ready to hang on the tree.

We love how sparkly these turned out, and they are a fun reminder of Mouse and his antics. My boys loved making them and they look fantastic on the tree with the lights!
